Wildfires have been increasing in deadliness as the population expands and the extreme weather conditions make them more likely to occur. The majority of people receive little if any training on the steps to take during these catastrophic natural disasters. Understanding the steps to take before, during, and after a wildfire can save lives and prevent the total loss of property that you may experience.

The first step is to prepare everyone in your household. Instruct the kids on how to properly use fire extinguishers. Put together a first-aid kit, ensuring that everyone in the home is aware of its components and its location. You can prep your home by installing protective shudders and fire-resistant drapery on the windows. The roof and the exterior components used in construction should also be fire-resistant, especially in high-risk areas.

During a wildfire, heed all warnings for evacuation. If there are no evacuation orders, then still be prepared by arranging temporary shelter outside of the area being threatened. Drafts in the home are extremely dangerous during fires. They can suck fire into a space by providing fresh oxygen to burn. Close all the windows and doors to prevent this occurrence. If you must venture outdoors, then wear goggles, masks, and protective clothing. The most injuries from fire occur due to damage from smoke rather than the actual flames.

After the disaster, it is wise for residents to be weary of any signs of additional burning. Smoldering ashes and coals have the potential to reignite the area for several days after the actual event. Inspect your home and the surrounding property for damage or potential hazards that have resulted from the fire. Residents are also advised to dispose of food that has come in contact with smoke, extreme heat, or soot from the wildfire.

Extreme weather conditions cause injury and loss of life each year. To reduce your risks during an extreme weather event, preparation is the key. Listen to your local weather authorities when they tell you to evacuate or prepare. Have an emergency preparation kit on hand to grab if you are told to evacuate. Your emergency kit should include canned food that doesn’t need to be heated, protein bars, water and a first aid kit.

Your first aid kit should contain bandages for minor injuries, pain reliever and antibacterial cream or ointment for scratches or cuts. You should also keep important documents on hand in plastic bags such as insurance papers. If you have children, then you would include diapers, sanitary wipes and baby food. You should discuss emergency plans with every member of the family.

Everyone should know what to do in case of an emergency. Make sure you have cash on hand in case you can’t get to an ATM to retrieve money. Store an extra credit card with your important papers. You must be prepared with enough food and water to last approximately three days. If your home is a victim of a weather-related incident, do not go outside because dangerous power lines may be on the ground.

The basement of your home can provide an excellent shelter during various types of natural disasters. Ensuring that it will provide the protection that you want for you and your family requires a little preparation, however. The first step is to guard the area against flooding. Checking for leaks and other ventilation systems that may make the space vulnerable will prevent the shelter from quickly becoming a threat in an of itself. In the event that you will be unable to leave the basement for long periods of time, it is important that there is some kind of natural drainage pipe leading away from the space. Living with human waste in a confined space for any extended period of time quickly leads to disease.

Natural disasters can also have environmental effects that last for weeks or even months. Extreme disasters may cut off the supply of fresh food and water to your general area. Stocking the basement with food and bottled water that will last for at least a month is advisable. The bottled water should also be rotated for a fresh supply every six months. The walls of most basements are insulated and constructed in a sturdy enough manner to provide adequate protection. The roof of the basement is often a different story. Enhance the shelter by installing additional plywood to thicken the tinsel strength of the surface. Some homeowners will apply additional layers wood that extend up to 38 inches.

When blizzard conditions are heading your way, it is best to be prepared for the worst. You may lose your services, including electricity and water, and may be snowed in for long periods of time. However, with proper preparation, you’ll be able to weather any type of blizzard that comes your way.

First, clean water is one of the most important supplies for any type of disaster. Each person needs at least a gallon of water per day to drink. When a blizzard is imminent, many people boost their water supplies by filling up bathtubs and other containers as a backup in case the weather keeps services turned off for a long period of time.

You’ll also want to have a stockpile of nonperishable foods, which include canned goods that don’t need to be heated to eat. Canned goods can last for long periods of time, and will suffice for nourishment long after any fresh foods have been eaten.

Finally, since your power may go out, you’ll also want to make sure that you’ve got plenty of warm clothes and blankets to last out the cold weather. You’ll also want a supply of fresh batteries and a flashlight or two to light your way at night.

If you are properly prepared for the storm, you’ll be sure to make it through without worry.

While we are usually well informed by our weather services about any impending disasters, the weather can still be unpredictable. Weather patterns can change instantly, dumping buckets of rain one minute and snowing heavily the next, only to round out the day with sunshine and warm temperatures a few hours later. Therefore, it is always best to have your family prepared for any type of disaster.

When a disaster happens, you may be confined within your home or be forced to leave quickly and without warning. You will want to know the most imminent risks, whether they be a possible hurricane, tornado or earthquake. You’ll then want to make sure each family member knows what they should do in case of an emergency. You’ll also need to make special plans if you care for an elderly or disabled individual, or if you have pets.

Finally, an emergency disaster kit should always be within reach, whether you are at home or out on the road. There are a large number of items that you will want to include, such as a first aid kit, knife, space blanket, fresh batteries and a flashlight. Extra clothing and a radio may also be ideal to keep nearby, and extra water should be stored as well. You’ll want to keep these items in a waterproof bag in case of flooding circumstances.

Disasters do happen, but if you and your family are properly prepared, you’ll have no problem weathering the storm.
